Anabel Garcia knows the power of a STAC education.
That’s because she brings her perspective as a recent alumna to her position as STAC’s Regional Admissions Coordinator for the Bronx and Manhattan. She is also a Special Program Advisor for STAC’s HEOP Program, an academic support program for students from low-income families who do not meet the College’s traditional admissions standards. “I interview and assist in the selection of new students, program development, and activities,” she says. “The program has an outstanding success rate, and 100 percent of the students are first-generation college students.”
Anabel is excited to help new generations of students begin their college journeys and settle into the place she’s come to call home. “St. Thomas Aquinas College will always feel like family,” she says. “I have the opportunity to interact with the students and to guide them with the college process. As a psychology major, I learned how valuable empathy is and how I can use this ability to connect with students and families.”
What sets STAC apart? Besides its many programs and welcoming community, Anabel points to the vast array of real-world experiences students in all majors can gain through internships the college makes possible.
As a student at STAC, Anabel immersed herself in her studies and in campus life, taking advantage of every opportunity to enjoy a rich college experience. She was active in campus affairs, holding leadership roles in student government, including secretary of the Student Government Association, student representative on the Student Development Committee of STAC’s Board of Trustees, and as a member of the Social Justice and Equity Committee. She was a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society of Psychology and also gave back to the student community as a Resident Assistant for two years. Off-campus, she volunteered at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church and Crossroads Community Soup Kitchen.
When she’s not answering questions from prospective students and their parents or handling her many other responsibilities, Anabel loves to hike, cook, travel to tropical destinations, and spend time with her Golden Doodle, Toby.
