Sabrina Vargas-Greco ’93 – Alum

Sabrina Vargas-Greco graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College with a degree in Business Administration, but has spent thirty years of her professional career in local government all because of a life-changing internship she did at STAC during her final semester.

Over the last three decades, Sabrina has dedicated her life to the betterment of Rockland County citizens.  Her long and impressive career in local government began in her senior year at STAC, after a faculty adviser provided her the opportunity to serve as Legislative Intern at the District Office of the local New York State Assemblyman.

From there, Sabrina climbed the ranks of local government; she was immediately offered a full-time position of Legislative Assistant following the internship and then, in 2001, she was promoted to Chief of Staff. In 2015, she was hired by the Rockland County Legislature as Confidential Assistant to the Chairman, where she worked with constituents, residents, organizations, and the community-at-large.

In December of 2022, Sabrina was appointed by the New York State Unified Court System’s 9^th Judicial District as Commissioner of Jurors for Rockland County.

A Haverstraw native, Sabrina is the first from her family to graduate from college. Her parents, Rafael and Lourdes Vargas migrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1950s and worked as a carpenter and seamstress, respectively. “From an early age, my parents instilled in me the value of good work ethics, integrity and discipline, while at the same time the importance of dedicating quality time and effort to balance it with family,” Sabrina says.

When she was 18, Sabrina did not think she would attend college at all. But she committed to STAC after visiting the campus and falling in love “with the character and atmosphere of the institution,” and says she has never regretted her decision to attend.

During her career, Sabrina has served on several committees and received many awards and recognitions. In 2015, STAC inducted Sabrina into the Alumni Hall of Fame, and in 2002, the Rockland Economic Development Corporation selected her for the Forty Under 40 award because of her significant impact within the Rockland community. Currently, Sabrina serves as a member of the STAC Alumni Association Board and the Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland Development Board. She is also the Development Committee Chair for One-to-One Learning Center (an organization that helps tutor non-English speakers) and serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors for 100 Hispanic Women Rockland County Program. Of her work in the community, Sabrina says, “I have had the good fortune to assist many individuals with a myriad of issues—it’s heartwarming to know that my career provides opportunities to assist others in need.”

Sabrina believes STAC has helped her achieve success in life, stating that “although I did not know it then, my years at STAC prepared me for almost every aspect of my professional life now, whether it was the marketing, communications, or business law courses. I have applied the lessons learned at STAC throughout my professional career, as a volunteer on many boards, and with my family life as well.”

To future and current STAC students, Sabrina advises not to be afraid to take on new challenges, as STAC has given them the knowledge and skills for a successful future.

Regarding her own future, Sabrina says, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as Commissioner of Jurors and look forward to applying my skills and providing assistance to others while making significant contributions to the community-at-large.”

Sabrina married Michael Greco in 2008, a career law enforcement professional who was appointed by President Barack Obama as the United States Marshal for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) in 2015, and who has the distinction of being the first Latino to hold that position in SDNY. She is also a loving mother to four children and grandmother to one. Sabrina loves to read, spend time with family—and unsurprisingly—offer her time to help her community. Go, Sabrina!
