Michael Maher ’25, MPA ’26 knew he wanted to continue his studies in STAC’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program upon graduating in 2025 with his degree in Criminal Justice and minor in Computer Science. Michael says the MPA program had a very positive impact on him and strengthened his leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which are critical when addressing real-world public service issues. Michael notes: “The professors were supportive and brought practical experience into the classroom, which is helping me prepare for a career in public service and law enforcement. The program gave me a stronger understanding of how effective leadership can make a difference in a community, company, nonprofit organization, or law enforcement agency.”
The College’s professors go beyond the classroom by helping open doors and creating opportunities for their students. Michael reflects on how one of his MPA professors helped him secure a student worker position in the Computer Division at the Clarkstown Police Department, an opportunity that gave him valuable real-world experience. He notes: “with smaller class sizes, everyone has the opportunity to share their ideas and perspectives, creating meaningful discussions around relevant issues that are happening today. While students may pursue an MPA for different reasons, such as preparing for law school, working in the nonprofit sector, law enforcement, or advancing their current career, STAC’s MPA program provides a well-rounded experience that supports a variety of professional goals.”
Michael has so many amazing memories from his college journey at STAC: “One of my favorite memories was having the opportunity to travel to Fanjeaux, France. It was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to explore a new culture, learn more about STAC’s Dominican heritage, create lasting memories, and deepen my faith. I served as an Orientation Leader for Spartan Journey in 2022, 2023, and 2024, which gave me the opportunity to welcome incoming students and help them begin their journey at STAC. I also had the privilege of serving as Student Government Association President, where I represented the student body and helped strengthen the connection between students and the STAC community.” Since October 2025, he has continued that involvement as a Residence Life Professional, supporting students and helping create a positive experience. Michael is also the College’s Institutional Advancement Coordinator, working with fellow alumni and members of his team on campus.
