After graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 1996, Lisa Horgan began her career as a paraprofessional before transitioning to teaching Kindergarten at a private school for three years. In 1999, she started her Master’s degree at STAC while also stepping into her first public school teaching role at PS 189 in Washington Heights, NY. She started as a Literacy Enhancement Teacher before moving into 3rd and 4th grade classrooms as a Literacy Specialist after earning her Master’s degree in 2003.
In 2005, following the birth of her daughter, Lisa sought a position closer to home and began teaching in New Milford, NJ. She was hired as a Basic Skills Literacy Teacher, but in 2012 she transitioned to teaching 1st grade, when she realized she missed the classroom environment. For the past six years, Lisa has co-taught in a collaborative classroom alongside a full-time special education teacher—she has found this experience and career path deeply rewarding. In 2019, Lisa was honored as Berkley School’s Teacher of the Year—an achievement that truly reflects her dedication to education!
Lisa notes: “I can remember going on interviews and would hear from many, “Oh, you’re a STAC teacher?” Many principals would comment on how well prepared STAC educators were for the real world of teaching. I felt that I gained valuable insight and getting a dual certification really broadened my knowledge base to help make me the teacher I am today.”
Reflecting on her time at the College, Lisa explains how the personal connections she built with professors made her education even more meaningful, and the friendships and professional relationships she formed at STAC continue to be invaluable.
St. Thomas Aquinas College has been a part of Lisa’s family for many years. Now, her daughter, Abigail is carrying on the teaching tradition! Abigail is currently a sophomore at STAC, pursuing her degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. When Abigail and her family began the college application process, Lisa notes: “My husband and I’s first choice was STAC. I knew the education I received and wanted the same for my child. I am very proud that Abigail chose St. Thomas Aquinas College as the institution where she will start her journey as a future educator.”
