Earn your degree on your time
Our 36 credit program can be completed in two years or at a pace that best suits your schedule. Designed with working professionals in mind, all classes are conveniently held in the late afternoon and evening, with some online options as well. Complete your practicum in the spring or summer under the supervision of a certified literacy specialist.

How do culture and ethnicity impact learning and literacy? Discover multicultural literature and infuse your classroom with new and diverse texts to raise your students’ cultural and social awareness. This course also covers strategies for teaching English language learners.
Examine the multiple purposes, processes, and principles of assessment, including how to use formal and informal assessments and evaluate findings to inform literacy instruction. Learn the most effective interventions for motivating and engaging your students and equipping readers and writers who struggle with new tools for studying and test-taking.
This capstone hands-on course explores the role of the literacy specialist as a coach and school leader who supports colleagues. Develop the knowledge, understanding, and performance skills to organize and supervise literacy programs that enrich learning and raise the bar for literacy school-wide.
Program options
The MSED in Literacy Education equips today’s educators with advanced training for application in the classroom and in specialized leadership roles. Choose the option that best matches your career goals: Early Childhood & Childhood Literacy, Birth-Grade 6, or Middle Childhood & Adolescence Literacy, Grades 5-12.
In addition to the MSED in Literacy, St. Thomas Aquinas College also offers master’s programs in Special Education and Special Education with an Autism Specialization.
Graduates of the MSED programs are invited to return to St. Thomas Aquinas College to pursue post-master’s certificates in special education/special education with Autism specialization at alumni discounted rates to qualify for additional certifications and salary increases.
