In line with St. Thomas Aquinas College’s foundational commitment to nurturing the whole self, STAC is committed to providing students with the full range of support needed to promote their social, emotional, and physical wellness so they can thrive in college and beyond. While the need for mental health support on college campuses has always been strong— nearly 40% of college students report experiencing a significant mental health issue—the still-unfolding trauma of the pandemic and its impact on the lives of adolescents and young adults have made the need greater than ever. In a recent national survey of college students, 72% reported that the pandemic negatively affected their mental health, 68% that it hurt their motivation/focus, and 67% that it led to feelings of loneliness/isolation. Left unaddressed, students’ mental health struggles can not only interfere with their ability to learn but can also lead to long-term consequences affecting their physical health, as well as future employment and earning potential.
