The Azarian McCullough Art Gallery at St. Thomas Aquinas College is pleased to present a group exhibition by 14 Sculptors entitled Fire/ Haiku. This body of work explores the relationship between art and poetry with a series of artworks inspired by haiku.

For Fire/ Haiku, the artists played with the metaphor of fire referencing topics ranging from politics to global warming, paired with the poetic form of haiku, as creative expression in both artforms. Artists considered  the power of word-images as inspiration, coupled with an attentiveness to the meditative state of being or “flow”. Each artist’s approach to the topic of fire was coordinated with an accompanying haiku as a point of inspiration.

Metaphorically fire is transformative, and represents both destruction and the birth of something new. It is as fundamental as “fire in the belly”, “the eternal flame” and the immortal regeneration of the phoenix. This complex relationship is reflected in each artist’s installation.

14 Sculptors is a  group of professional artists who actively exhibit through 14 Sculptors Inc., a non-profit tax exempt organization which operates under the umbrella of The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). In 1973, in the SOHO district of New York, 14 Sculptors first opened its doors to the public, creating a forum for experimental sculpture, free from the constraints of a commercial viewpoint.

14 Sculptors, Fire/ Haiku, is running now through January 10, 2025.
