St. Thomas Aquinas College officially opened the 2024-2025 academic year with its annual New Student Convocation, held yesterday at the Sacred Heart Chapel. Hosted by the founding Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, the event united new and returning Spartans for an inspiring start to their academic journey.
In his address, President Ken Daly emphasized the College’s commitment to fostering a strong sense of community and support.
“Our Convocation marks a pivotal moment for our students, setting the stage for growth, meaningful connections, and the pursuit of excellence,” President Daly remarked. “Together, our community will empower our new students to seize opportunities, overcome challenges, and ignite passions that will last a lifetime.”
Following his remarks, several additional speakers shared their insights:
- Sr. Irene Ellis, O.P., Congregational Prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, shared words of welcome and inspiration.
- Samantha Bazile, Director of Student Engagement and Chief Diversity Officer, reaffirmed the College’s steadfast commitment to supporting students throughout the year.
- Dr. Pamela Derfus, Chair of the Faculty Senate, extended a warm welcome on behalf of the faculty, encouraging students to fully embrace their academic pursuits.
- Nina Luppino ‘07 shared personal reflections, offering valuable advice, while Tyler Robinson, Vice Chair of the Student Government Association, spoke passionately about the vibrant student life on campus.
- Dean Kevin Nesbitt provided words of encouragement, reminding students of the many ways they can stay connected throughout their college journey.
- Provost Dr. Robert Murray delivered a powerful call to action, inviting students to pledge their commitment to the College’s core values of service and leadership.
The ceremony also paid tribute to President Emeritus Dr. Donald T. McNelis with a moment of silence, led by President Emerita Dr. Margaret Fitzpatrick, S.C., honoring his enduring impact on the College, and a quote from Dr. McNelis, shared by President Daly: “We discovered the operative formula — if we provide a quality education at an affordable cost in a caring, embracing environment on a beautiful, state-of-the-art campus, the students will seek us out!”
The Convocation concluded with a blessing by Sr. Nancy Richter, O.P., and a joyful New Student Walk past the founding Dominican Sisters, symbolizing the shared journey of the entire College community.
