Since beginning her college experience, Laila Wright ’27 has embraced many opportunities to learn more about herself and the future she hopes to build.
“One of my favorite college experiences so far has been discovering more about myself and what I truly enjoy. College has given me the opportunity to explore different interests, get involved in new activities, and step outside of my comfort zone. A small but meaningful part of that has been dorming and learning how to live more independently, which has helped me grow and become more confident.” Laila noted.
Being a Psychology major with a minor in Art Therapy has given Laila valuable insight into what her career path can look like. Laila notes how one of her first psychology courses was very hands-on and engaging, confirming her interest in the subject.
Laila has also been following her passions through her involvement in the Mission and Ministry Program. The campus organization has become one of the most meaningful parts of her college experience, as she has been able to combine creativity with community service, making a positive impact while developing close friendships along the way. Laila also recently participated in the Dominican Preaching in Action Conference, where students and mentors from across the country participated in sessions and community service activities that connected them to the Dominican tradition.
Laila encourages incoming students to embrace the unknown and not let fear hold them back: “one piece of advice I would give to someone starting their college journey is to go for it and don’t be scared. It’s normal to feel unsure or overwhelmed at times, but that’s all part of the growth process. You might face challenges along the way, but having a good support system makes all the difference. Also, take the time to really explore what your school has to offer whether that’s clubs, programs, academic support, or campus events. Getting involved helps you grow both personally and academically.”
