This course is designed to introduce students to the theory and practice of public policy. Students will learn the foundations of public policy, including the history, basic principles, theory, ethics, and values, the connection between policy and practice, and the application of human service strategies.
This course covers a broad overview of research methodologies, with a particular focus on applying research methodology to the analysis of social problems and the development of sound social policy.
This course uses the experience of childbirth to explore the intricate ways the United States medical system creates, reinforces, and exacerbates long-percolating social inequities in regard to gender, race, class, and sexuality. The course will also broaden a student’s understanding of healthcare options by providing an array of comparisons between the United States healthcare system and global approaches to maternal healthcare.
