St. Thomas Aquinas College recognizes the critical importance of protecting the safety and well being of our students. Often it is people outside of the Counseling Office who first become aware of students in crisis.
The chart below is designed to help you recognize a mental health crisis and know how to respond.
Mental Health Emergency
- A life threatening situation in which an individual is
- In imminent danger of harming themself or others
- Severely disoriented or out of touch with reality
- Unable to function
- Severely distraught or out of control
What to do:
**Do not leave the person alone!**

Mental Health Crisis
- A non-life threatening situation in which someone is:
- Exhibiting extreme emotional or behavioral disturbance
- Considering harm to self or others
- Disoriented
- Compromised in their ability to function
- Otherwise agitated and unable to be calmed
What to do:
**Do not leave the person alone!**

Mental Health Concern
- A non-urgent and non-life threatening situation in which an individual is:
- Experiencing emotional distress or discomfort
- Still able to function and take care of themselves
What to do:

*The Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday from 9am – 5pm and only when class is in session. Emails and voicemails left for the Counseling Center may not be received until the next working day. If you need immediate assistance, Campus Safety is available 24/7 all year.
