Study Beyond at St. Thomas Aquinas College
From the rolling prairie of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation to the bustling city life of London, St. Thomas Aquinas students embark on once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to explore, learn, and grow across the country and around the world. Several programs offer students the chance to earn credit toward their college degrees while spending anywhere from one week to a full semester anywhere from Nicaragua to France.
STUDY BEYOND CLASSROOM PROGRAMS
St. Thomas Aquinas offers “Study Beyond” courses that combine classroom learning with a one or two-week trip to an international or domestic locale. The trips take place during the academic year. Destinations have included Nicaragua, Mexico, London, Italy, France, and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
STUDY BEYOND Partnership Programs
Through our partner program with St. John’s University, St. Thomas Aquinas students are eligible for additional Study Beyond programs. Our students can maintain their scholarships and eligible grants during the program, though they will be charged an additional fee by St. John’s University (charged to their St. Thomas Aquinas bill).
Additional Opportunities
In partnership with Disney World (Florida), St. Thomas Aquinas offers students the opportunity to spend a semester interning at Disney while maintaining full-time college students status. Most majors are eligible. Students earn a stipend during their Disney internship and are provided with a housing option.
The Disney College Program is a paid internship offering participants the opportunity to advance their strengths and interests, meet guests and cast members from around the world and take part in educational opportunities students can’t get anywhere else. This unique program allows participants to network with leaders, take part in personal and career development classes, and build transferable skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, guest service and effective communication.
Through the Disney College Program students will gain valuable on-the-job experience in Disney parks and resorts, while expanding their knowledge in a classroom with students from all over the country and potentially the world. The program offers students Disney’s one-of-a-kind living, learning and earning experience.
Want to spend a semester studying in South Korea? How about England? Then check out STAC’s international student-exchange agreement with South Korea’s Kyung Hee University School of Management and St. Mary’s University in London.
Do you want to gain a competitive edge in a global marketplace? Learn a foreign language! Through our partnership with Education First, St. Thomas Aquinas students can earn college credits while honing their foreign language skills in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Costa Rica, Japan, Singapore or China during winter or spring break.
Interested in studying in a country or foreign university not currently affiliated with St. Thomas Aquinas College? You can. But you must follow our Study Abroad Program procedures.
There are numerous study abroad companies that will help you organize an educational trip. Here are a few that we have researched, but have not vetted. Students take on the responsibility of choosing a tour option along with courses. St. Thomas Aquinas will only pre approve the course selection and is not affiliated with any company unless noted. These web sites enable you to explore what subject in what country you would like to explore. Costs and all fees are paid to the organization and not St. Thomas Aquinas College. Please check to see if you are eligible to use any of your federal or state aid if it is during a full college semester. No St. Thomas Aquinas College scholarships and grants apply to these programs. You will need to have your courses approved to be transferred back to St. Thomas Aquinas College so that they appear on your curriculum sheet and fulfill graduation requirements.
The American Institute for Foreign Study or AIFS Abroad
The Council on International Educational Exchange or CIEE
HOW TO GET STARTED
- Speak with your Academic Advisor about your desire to Study Beyond. Consider what semester might work best and how that would impact your track toward graduation.
- Make sure that you have flexibility in your course selection as courses offered in other countries will need to be approved by St. Thomas Aquinas College to fulfill a degree requirement.
- Once you have determined that it is feasible to fit the study beyond experience into your academic program, visit the Office of Academic Services to discuss your options further. Plan a year ahead for Study Abroad and see our deadlines for Study Beyond experiences like the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation spring break trip — you will also need to register for that course at St. Thomas Aquinas College as an example of pre planning.
