St. Thomas Aquinas College was founded as a teacher’s college. We have a long legacy of preparing knowledgeable, caring educators who are passionate about learning, teaching, and making a difference in the world, one student at a time.
Our School of Education offers a number of Masters degrees for certified teachers. Teachers can start these programs in the Fall, Spring or Summer. Classes are offered late afternoon after the school day.
We offer the following speciality areas:
MSEd in LITERACY
The comprehensive, field-based program in literacy is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association (IRA). The program consists of 36 credits with 30 credits of core requirements including a supervised practicum in teaching literacy and 6 credits of electives in Special Education, Teacher leadership, or Middle-level instruction. The program uses an integrated approach that includes assessment, planning, instruction, and critical reflection to prepare professionals who are proficient in providing literacy instruction to all students. An additional goal is to prepare professionals proficient in organizing and supervising literacy programs in schools. MSEd in Special Education
The extensive field-based Special Education program is designed to prepare teachers to meet the needs of students with disabilities in a variety of settings such as special self-contained classes, resource room, and co-taught classrooms. The program provides knowledge and skills, including instructional strategies, assessment, and collaboration, related to teaching children and adolescents with disabilities. The program is nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The program consists of 36 credits with 30 credits of core requirements including a supervised practicum in teaching special education and 6 credits of electives in Literacy, Teacher leadership, or Middle-level instruction.
The program is offered at two developmental levels meeting certification requirements for teaching students with disabilities with an option to specialize in Autism Spectrum Disorders at either level. This option allows candidates to pursue an annotation in severe or multiple disabilities. Learn More
MSEd in TESOL
Through our 30-credit master’s program, you will gain essential knowledge and learn effective pedagogical strategies to meet the diverse needs of English Language Learners. The curriculum includes lesson plan development framed by cultural/diversity competencies so that teachers can help future students learn and thrive. The College also offers a 18-credit Post-Master’s certificate in TESOL option. Learn More
